In 1889, it was only a cul-de-sac, standing at the edge of The Rockaways, but the road was soon expanded for further growth.
Flight 587 Memorial commemorates the second greatest aircraft disaster in the history of the United States. An appropriate quotation from a poem by the Dominican poet Pedro Mir “Después no quiero más que paz” (“Afterwards I only want peace”) is engraved on the wall in both Spanish and English. The memorial wall and the newly landscaped plaza were designed using private and public funds and were built in collaboration with the victims’ families and the city of Belle Harbor. It was designed by an artist who grew up in the Dominican Republic, Freddy Rodriguez, and Situ Studio LLC, the artist’s preliminary and schematic architecture consultant.
