What is it Like Living in Flushing, NY?
This is a neighborhood bordered by Flushing-Meadows Corona Park to the west, Utopia Parkway to the east, the Long Island Expressway to the south, and Willets Point Boulevard to the north. It’s well renowned for its diverse culture and fascinating history dating back to Colonial times. The community’s Chinese-immigrant population has long exceeded that of Chinatown in Manhattan, and while the area is recognized as a refuge for incoming immigrants, it is also a place of amazing transition, particularly as the outer-borough real estate seeps deeper into Queens. The production of residential and industrial properties is booming here, so it’s the perfect place to look for a new home.
A Rich and Impactful History
Named after the nearby Flushing Creek, it was discovered in 1645 by Dutch pilgrims. The region soon attracted English settlers seeking religious liberty, and one local, John Bowne, began conducting Quaker meetings within his house at a time when religion was strongly repressed in much of the New England colonies. The Flushing Remonstrance was signed in 1657 by colonists who opposed religious persecution, and the Dutch West India Company allowed Quakers and others to worship openly in response. The neighborhood is said to be the cradle of religious tolerance in the Modern World for that reason.
This was one of the five founding settlements of Queens County when the English gained possession of New York in the 1660s. The township existed until Queens became part of New York City in 1898, and the present-day community was given the name it has today. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city became densely populated, but it was not until the 1970s that the Chinese community gained a foothold here. According to immigration records, Taiwanese immigrants arrived here first, choosing this place instead of Manhattan Chinatown to establish a higher quality of life and better housing. Soon, the Chinese immigrants from numerous regions and provinces followed; an influx that has persisted into the present.
Well-Preserved Cultural Heritage
You can still find remnants from its days as an English settlement, especially when it comes to architecture. The John Bowne House and the Old Quaker Meeting House are now a museum that teaches visitors about local history and the importance of establishing freedom of religion in the country. The Town Hall is also a popular cultural destination in the neighborhood. This old courthouse and jailhouse, built in 1862, is now a flourishing center for visual and performing arts.
Home to the Fourth-Largest Park in NYC
If you’re moving with pets, you’ll be pleased to know the neighborhood partly owes its name to the most famous 1,255-acre park in Queens, the gorgeous Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The fourth-largest park in NYC was built to host the 1963 World Fair and subsequently hosted the 1964 Fair, as well. Remnants of the Fairs are present today, such as the New York State Pavilion and the Unisphere. A number of other Queens attractions are located in the park, including the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Aquarium, the Queens Nature Center, and the Open Tennis Tournament.
The Most Exquisite Food in All Five Boroughs
There’s a famous food court at the New World Mall where you can eat hand-rolled dumplings, scallion pancakes, hot pots, and hand-pulled noodles. Another foodie hotspot can be found at Golden Shopping Center, the one where Xi’an Renowned Foods first began selling their dumplings (and thankfully still do to this day). Apart from that, you can eat out at the many restaurants that specialize in Taiwanese, Szechuan, Cantonese, Korean-Chinese cuisine. What separates this community from other Chinatown areas is its Northeast China’s dark Dongbei style of cuisine. As a newcomer, you simply must try it. Unfortunately, the bar scene here is scarce, and the nightlife is mostly concentrated around hotels. The Oo Bar and Lounge, for instance, is situated on the top floor of One Hotel. In Murray Hill, the Koreatown of Flushing, there is also a popular karaoke bar, Happy Karaoke.
