What Is It Like Living in Eltingville, Staten Island

On Staten Island’s southern shore, south of Great Kills and north of Annandale, lies the affluent and cozy neighborhood Eltingville. The area, initially called South Side, then Seaside, owes its present name to the prominent Elting family that settled there in the early 19th century. At the start of the 20th century, Eltingville was settled primarily by Scandinavians, mostly Norwegians. Although unrelated, the families often shared identical surnames, including Hansen, Johnson, Erickson, Ronning, Nygren, Bundesen, and Swanson. These were so common that, to differentiate between families, people would adjoin their trade or other defining characteristics with nicknames, such as “delicatessen Hansen”, “fish Hansen,” “two-family” Hansen. The Scandinavian influence here was so strong that one could buy herring in wooden barrels, which would be taken home and pickled.

Until the late twentieth century, this was a rural community, but then, with the opening of Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, housing and business development started booming. Eltingville was the southern terminus of the Staten Island Railway until 1860 when the line was extended to Tottenville, and the community’s central business district sprang up around the railroad station. Nowadays, one can quickly get to the Staten Island Railway using the main bus line along Richmond Avenue. This avenue, together with Armstrong Avenue and Amboy Road, makes for an exciting destination full of supermarkets, drugstores, delis, pet stores, pizzerias, travel agencies, and various restaurants.

It Has an Excellent Livability Score

We all know that living in Staten Island isn’t cheap. Although the cost of living is around 18% higher than the NY average, Eltingville has an excellent livability score and it ranks better than 59% of areas. It also has an incredible public school system. In particular, Eltingville Lutheran School is well renowned throughout the nation for its students’ academic achievements.

It’s One of the Safest Neighborhoods in New York

Astoundingly, the crime rate is 72% lower than the national average, which makes it safer than 92% of other New York neighborhoods. There’s only a one in 140 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime, and that’s why Eltingville is one of the best places to live in Staten Island, especially for families with children.

There are Beautiful Parks in the Area

Seaside Wildlife Nature Park is a small, charming place for rest and recreation that has a lot to offer to nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys being outdoors. This adorable retreat is a true hidden gem, with a nautical-themed playground, jungle gyms, and a lighthouse. You can explore the many different facilities with your friends, children, or pets. At Seaside Wildlife Nature Park, you can spend an enjoyable time relishing its beautiful nature rich with a variety of flora and fauna. This incredible place is full of surprises – it is the habitat of more than 60 species of birds, making the park a paradise for birdwatchers and ornithologists. Since it is surrounded by water and a sandy beach-like area, one can often see many interesting shells, crabs, clams, and mussels of all shapes, colors, and sizes. As for its flora, some of the most visually pleasing tree-species grow there and provide shade and shelter on hot, sunny days.

Robert Moses created Great Hills Park in 1947, and this remarkable, refreshing place has been a part of the National Park Service since the establishment of the Gateway National Recreation Area in 1972. It has one of the nicest beaches in the area, making it perfect for taking photos and enjoying a spectacular view of the sunset. It is also an ideal recreation area, as it has long trails for hiking and biking. Its marina is one of the favorite places of local fishermen who often gather in various fishing areas around the park. The park’s management also offers ranger-led activities for enriching the experience at this place even more.
